More mystery hardware hype

A-EON won’t tell us the CPU of the Amiga X1000 and now there’s more mystery coming from DiscreetFX, the company that seems to do a little bit of everything. This time it’s mystery hardware for Classic Amigas.

According to their website there seems to be three new hardware items coming up on June 30th.

  1. “We have never sold this type of brand new hardware before but retro Amiga fans will be very pleased. Look for something exciting from us soon that will help you get more enjoyment out of your Amiga.”
  2. “Why have one when you can have two. Your Amiga is going to break the sound barrier.”
  3. “Use something virtual to speed up your 3D renders.”

So, anyone care to make an educated, or not so educated, guess on what it might be?

Firefox for Amiga released

The Frieden brothers have released an alpha version of their Firefox port, named Timberwolf, for AmigaOS 4.x today.

“We have to apologize for the long absence. Workload, personal issues and other things slowed down development considerably.

However, we’re finally able to make the first binary release of Timberwolf. This is going to be an Alpha version, meaning it will be prone to crashing and misbehavior, it will be slow, and not all functionality is implemented yet.”

MorphOS 2.5 was released a few days ago. With this new release the Apple eMac is now a officially supported platform. There are a lot of changes in the 2.5 release, so have a look at the release notes.

The Amiga as evidence

Apparently an Amiga 1000 was used as evidence when IP Innovations tried to sue Red Hat and Novell for patent infringement about “User interface with multiple workspaces for sharing display system objects“.

An Amiga 1000 was shown in court displaying that Workbench did have the multiple workspaces prior to the IP Innovations patent and therefor helping Novell win the case over the Linux patents.

Origyn Web Browser 3.27 for Amiga

It wasn’t too long ago when I wrote about the new 3.25 version of Origyn Web Browser (OWB) for AmigaOS 4.x. OWB has been updated twice since and is now up to version 3.27. There are a couple of bug fixes in the new version and disabling of SVG support and the removal of rarely used character sets in ICU has made it possible to free 8 MB of RAM.

Trevor Dickinson of A-EON talks about the AmigaOne X1000

Obligement has published an interview with Trevor Dickinson, one of the founders of A-EON. A good read for everyone interested in knowing more about the AmigaOne X1000 project.

Among other things, he speaks about the mystery dual core CPU:

”It will be the first time this CPU has been used in any “desktop” computer and suffice to say we think it’s quite special.”
